Best foods to eat in Bangkok
Bangkok has a wide variety of dishes. And they are still stars in the art of street food. Going to Thailand and not sampling a street food is depriving yourself of one of the main Thai experiences.
Eating on the street does not have much hygiene. There is no trash can in the cities and the garbage accumulates there in the same post, next to the food stalls. The salesmen take the money and their food. Do what? Pretend you have not seen and eat.
As for restaurants, one of the advantages is that the menus usually have pictures of the dishes and this helps a lot at lunch time.
If you get a nostalgia for western food (normal, especially on long trips) in Bangkok it has quite a good restaurant, mainly by the malls. In other cities it is harder to find good western food. Order a pizza and you’ll understand what I’m saying.
3 basic rules for not going bad
Despite having a weak stomach and eating a lot on the street, I did not have a bad time in Asia. But it is quite common. You get dehydrated from the heat, eat a lot of things you’re not used to and the hygiene conditions are not always the best.
There are a few basic rules to keep you from having a bad mood.
Give preference to the dishes where the food is cooked because the cooking eliminates the germs and bacteria that make it bad (still, it does not always work)
Drink lots of bottled water and those that signal to be ‘mineral’ – not all bottle waters of Thailand are.
If the pepper does not suit you, consider the possibility of the dish being prepared without it.
Do not eat a dove. I do not know, you’d better not risk it, right?
Pad Thai
It is the most famous dish in Bangkok, sold everywhere. It is the most prepared dish in the street stands. However, there is controversy over the origin of Pad Thai. Some chefs say they say yes, it is a Thai dish, while other chefs claim to be Chinese. The dish is made of fried noodles with scrambled egg, tofu, shrimp, bean sprouts, peanuts, lemon and fish, soy, tamarind and chilli sauces (which makes it a bit spicy). It turns out that some chefs say that this idea of fried noodles is something that Chinese immigrants brought to Thailand 250 years ago and what makes it Thai is just the sauce.
Anyway, you can not go around Thailand and ignore Pad Thai. During the first days of the month I spent in Bangkok, I ate Pad Thai at all meals. After all, there is no mistake. When you spend a lot of time traveling around a place there comes a time when you need some comfort and I was like Pad Thai. Until I got sick and had to start experimenting with other things …
Rice with chicken
This rice with chicken exists in the most varied forms. It can be spicy, the fried chicken, others with peppers, peanuts, etc. Take a look at the photo of the menu and the ingredients and choose yours. I think he’s the closest you’ll find to a Brazilian meal.
Fried rice in pineapple
This rice is what we call spring rice – the one that goes scrambled egg and vegetables and can be added a few pieces of meat or chicken if you want. All this served in the pineapple. As I love this mix of sweet and salty, I loved the dish. The best I ate was in a restaurant on Koh Lanta, in the middle of the road and facing the sea.
Soups
Soups are classic in Bangkok. The gringos love it, but I confess I did not drink much soup because I can not when it’s very hot – and I lived in the oven. They usually bring noodles too and you can choose whether you want chicken, fish, meat, with coconut milk, etc. There is a lot of variety and it sells everywhere.
Coconut shake (but you can order a mango too … or lemon … or …)
There is nothing more refreshing to take in that 14738 degree heat than a shake! They hit the fruits with ice and it’s practically a natural scratch card, but it’s pretty big. It sells a lot in the bars and restaurants of the islands. I drank several a day that cost around $ 5 – but they were huge!
Note: A German friend I made there took a coconut and said it was a little bad, she felt strange. But it may be because she is not accustomed to coconut (and I do not know if you know it, but coconut tends to loosen the gut) or it may be water that was not even good.
Coconut ice cream in the coconut
It also sells everywhere in Thailand. Some are hotter than others and do not have much as you know. This one from the photo I ate at Anantara resort I stayed in Chiang Rai and came with a gum underneath that looked like that tapioca cuscus, you know? It was delicious. I also heard that the coconut ice cream at the Jim Thompson Museum restaurant in Bangkok is also very good, but I have not tasted it.
Banana Roti
The roti is typically Indian, but was brought to Bangkok in the form of dessert and they dubbed it “Thai pancake”. I can say that I ate all-banana roti. Addicted! It’s kind of a fried pancake with banana in the middle, which they cut into squares and if you want to put nutella on top (I ordered ‘only’ condensed milk).
