There are a lot of things that you might want to see on any trip abroad or at home, but something that is usually a common theme there is nature. If you are something of a nature lover, you are probably keen to make this a big part of your travels, and in particular the chance to see some amazing animals all over the world. As it happens, one of the best ways to do that is of course to visit a zoo, and it is definitely true that some zoos are better than others. In this article, we are going to take a look at a number of the best zoos in the world – so you can make your decision as to where to travel to next based on that. You might be surprised at some of these, and others will be no surprise at all. But one thing’s for sure – they are all hugely exciting places to visit.

Wellington Zoo, New Zealand

If you ever find yourself in the stunning country of New Zealand, you should make a point of stopping off at the Wellington Zoo in its capital, the first zoo in the country and already one of the biggest in the world. It holds somewhere in the region of 500 animals, including a number of particularly exciting and rare endangered species. It is known for being a highly sustainable and eco-efficient zoo, making it a particularly noble zoo to visit and removing much of the guilt you might sometimes have about zoos. All in all, it’s a sprawling and diverse collection of species nestled in a beautiful part of the planet, and well worth a visit.

Calgary Zoo, Canada

If you thought that Wellington’s collection was impressive, how about this: Calgary Zoo in Canada has a collection of over 900 animals amongst many species, including animals from every corner of the Earth. As with Wellington Zoo, Calgary is a highly conservation-focused zoo, and you can be sure that the animals are treated well at all times. It’s also one of the more cost-effective zoos in the world as a visitor, with family tickets being particularly cheap, and is therefore a highly valuable day out indeed. What’s more, Calgary itself makes for a great destination, and if you can manage to find a room in a hotel in Calgary, Alberta, you will be sure to have a great night’s sleep. This zoo is an all-dayer, so be sure to get up early for it.

Australia Zoo, Australia

Founded by one of Australia’s most loved characters, Steve Irwin, this zoo is still run to this day by his wife and kids, and stands as one of the main conservation centres anywhere in the world. It is extraordinarily diverse and expansive, with 100 acres of zooland set in the beautiful Queensland countryside and well over a thousand animals held there. It also boasts having animals from every continent on Earth, something which not many zoos can say. If you spend eight hours here, you will still not be able to see it all, especially if you also want to set aside some time for a croc show. It’s well worth a visit, and hard to forget once you have.

  1. Adding all of these amazing places to my travel bucket list! I know Australia had a world renowned zoo, but hadn’t really heard of Calgary’s.

  2. I love zoos! I make it a habit that wherever we go as a family, a visit to a zoo is planned. And I’m happy to say that I’ve been to Wellington Zoo and would have to agree with you. If you’re ever in Singapore, their zoo is pretty amazing too!

  3. I love visiting zoos! I worked at one in the education department so I love getting to see how different cities (and countries) house animals for conservation and education. Haven’t been to these three yet – they sound great!
